A Disappearing 9-Patch

The DISAPPEARING 9-PATCH

One of my dear customers told me about this pattern and when I was snowed in for the second time within a month I decided to look it up. With a busy schedule and little ones always at my feet, I don't have a lot of time or space for quilting. That's why I love this pattern sew much! It can be sewn together in a weekend or just as easily packed and unpacked when your schedule gets in the way.

I used an assortment of 18"x22" fat quarters and was able to cut (16) 4 1/2" squares from each, but I was cutting right on the edge. That's why I decided it would be best to use 4" squares. This also makes a 10" finished block, which is a standard size. However, who's to say anyone has to conform to the standard. So, why not try using 5" charm squares for a more scrappy look.

Here is how I made this black, white and red version:

Here's What You'll Need:
6 Dark Fat Quarters
6 Light Fat Quarters
3/8 yd Contrast Fabric
1/2yd Inner Border
3/4yd Outer Border

*Do not prewash your fabric because this will cause excess shrinkage and fraying.

Cutting: Begin by cutting (16) 4 inch squares from each fat quarter. This will give you a total of 96 dark squares and 96 light squares. Next cut (24) 4 inch contrast squares.

The 9-Patch: Start sewing your squares together in the sequence: row 1: dark-light-dark, row 2: light-contrast-light, row 3: dark-light-dark. Make 24 blocks measuring 11 1/2 inches unfinished.

Disappearing 9-Patch: Cut your 9-patch blocks in half twice. Once vertically, once horizontally. Rotate the top right square 180 degrees. Rotate the bottom left square 180 degrees. Sew the 4 blocks back together. Your 24 blocks will now measure 10 1/2 inches unfinished.

Assemble The Blocks: Sew your 24 blocks into 6 rows, 4 blocks per each row. Sew the 6 rows together. Measure your

quilt top.

Adding Borders: For the 1 1/2 inch inner border, cut (6) 2" strips and sew them end-to-end until they are the correct length. First sew them to the sides and second to the top and bottom. For the 3 inch outer border cut (7) 3 1/2 inch strips. Repeat the steps above to attach the outer border.

That's it! You're ready to layer, quilt and bind! When you try this pattern, leave me a comment and tell me what you thought!

February Classes Scheduled and BOM Resumes

If you've been following me on Facebook you may have noticed I've been in a bit of a "Quick & Simple" mood. More and more UFO's were accumulating in my sewing room and I simply lost motivation in 2009. So as I moved forward into the new year I made a decision to start finishing things. And to get me going again I got back to basics with quarter square triangles and 9-patches. These weekend quilts have been so rewarding that they gave me another great idea.
Introducing our new Back To Basics Technique Classes! Starting in February we have scheduled a series of classes including, Quilting 101, Foundation Piecing, Bind and Finish, Hand Applique, Machine Applique, Hand Quilting and Machine Quilting. We're even offering 1 Free repeat, which will allow you to take what you've learned home to practice and come back again with any questions that you may stumble upon. I really think these are going to be a lot of fun and the best part, at $10 each they're super affordable.
But if you're looking for more somthing more inspirationally challenging, we have Ricky Tims' new Kool Kaleidoscope, Sew Easy Geese and many classes on the schedule.
If a class just isn't your thing, how about trying our block of the month club? It's called Mainstreet Madness Block Party and it takes place on the 3rd Friday of each month, starting in February. I'm Dreaming Of A White Christmas...

Just like the ones I've known back home. My husband and I made the decision to pinch pennies this year and stay home for the holidays. For me, it meant the first time in many years without a white Christmas. Luckily, my prayers were answered when 10 inches of fluffy white bliss fluttered to the ground Christmas eve and lingered around a couple of weeks. And since we had no place to go... Let it Snow! Kids around town took full advantage of the hill at the amphitheatre for sledding, using anything that would move... inflatable pool toys, cardboard boxes and even a waxed Corvette hood! With the quilt shop closed for 2 weeks I had lots of time to finish projects around the house and even start and finish a quick throw quilt to keep me warm in my downtime. I even cleaned and organized 3 closets, 4 kitchen cabinets and the entire garage! Quite an accomplishment. Our stay-cation turned out to be a wonderful holiday vacation and we didn't even need to travel half-way across the country to find a winter wonderland. From my family to yours, Merry Christmas!

Gifts For The Children

During the November and December Mainstreet Madness events in downtown Burkburnett, the Stitching Depot and other participating merchants conducted gift drives benefitting the local youth served this year through the Burkburnett Volunteer Fire Department's Operation Santa Claus program. BVFD firemen delivered gifts to over 370 children last Saturday. Christmas Party and Kimberly's Cocoa

Last night was so much fun! The streets were full of festivity and the store full of warm and jolly folks. The sugar cookies and fudge were delicious. Thank you Kathy for the oh sew cute choo choo sugar cookies. They were perfect! The hot cocoa was also a big hit and it didn't last long. If you missed out, here is the recipe so you and your family can enjoy it over the holidays.

Kimberly's Cocoa
1/2c sugar
1/4c unsweetened cocoa powder
4c milk
3/4tsp vanilla extract

1. Mix cocoa, sugar and one cup of milk in a saucepan. Over medium heat stir constantly until the mixture is heated. You can also heat in a microwave on 50% power until hot.
2. Slowly stir in the rest of the milk and continue to heat (do not boil). If heating in the microwave, add the remaining milk and heat on 50% power until hot.
3. Remove from heat and add vanilla. Mix well, top with mini marshmellows and enjoy!
Makes 4 cups

At this point I pour the hot cocoa into a crockpot on low heat and make a couple more batches.

A special thank you to everyone who brought toys to the shop for Operation Santa Claus. I dropped them off at the fire station last night after closing and the firemen were very grateful. This morning I saw fire trucks all over town, delivery the toys. A truly warm feeling. Thank you once again for your contributions! The winner of the $50 Gift Certificate is Darcus Pena! CONGRATULATIONS!

Merry Christmas!

I love this time of year. I love Christmas music, decorated trees, twinkling lights and the excitement in the eyes of young children. Most of all I love the spirit of giving. Far too often my heart is bigger than my wallet and when it comes to programs like Toys for Tots and Operation Santa Claus I struggle to set limits. I simply can not bare the thought of any child waking up Christmas morning, wondering why they weren't good enough for Santa to come.

This holiday season when you are rushing to finish your Christmas shopping, please add 1 extra gift to your list for a needy child in your area. Let's all have a VERY Merry Christmas and remember Christ is the Reason For The Season.

Operation Santa Claus and $50 Gift Certificate drawing

The Burkburnett Volunteer Fire Department is hosting OPERATION SANTA CLAUS to ensure needy children in our community receive a gift this holiday season. There are over 120 children registered in the program this year and we need your help to make each Christmas wish come true.

Many area businesses have set up Angel Trees for the children in need. Bring a NEW unwrapped gift to the quilt shop and you will be entered into a drawing to win a $50 Gift Certificate from The Stitching Depot. Deadline for gifts is December 18th.

2009 Mainstreet Madness Block Party Finishing Pattern

The 2009 Mainstreet Madness block of the month has finally come to an end. In this economy we all need to find better ways to budget our money. With this series we were able to reflect back to the 30's when times were tough and quilters utilized every scrap of material available to them. We carry the theme of a traditional sashing pattern to complement the traditional blocks we have made over the past 9 months.

To complete the quilt top you will need 24 sashing strips, 12 intersecting X blocks, 4 corner blocks and the 9 sample blocks you completed for Mainstreet Madness. Each of the sample blocks in this pattern are 12 1/2" unfinished.

Fabric Requirement:
1 1/3 yard of white (background & border)
1 1/3 yard of solid navy (sashing)

Cutting Instructions:
From white fabric cut
A - (14) 3 3/4" squares, cut diagonally twice
B - (2) 4" squares, cut diagonally once
C - (24) 2 3/4" x 12 1/2" rectangles
D - (6) 2" x WOF strips
From navy fabric cut
E - (16) 6 1/2" x 1 1/2" rectangles
F - (28) 3 1/2" x 1 1/2" rectangles
G - (48) 12 1/2" x 1 1/4" rectangles

Intersecting X blocks: Start with (2) A triangles and (1) F rectangle. Sew an A triangle to each side of the F rectangle, aligning the edges along one end of the narrow edge of the rectangle. Press your seams toward the center. Repeat. Next you will sew these (2) units to an E rectangle. Begin by finding the centers. Finger press E rectangle in half lengthwise or measure 3 ¼” and lightly mark with a chalk pencil. Fold both of the A/F units in half widthwise and finger press or lightly mark with a chalk pencil. You are ready to sew each A/F unit to the E rectangle. Be careful to line them up, making a perfect X. Finally, trim your square down to 4 ¼”. Important: Make sure the blue corners are trimmed evenly! You will repeat these steps until you have made 12 X blocks.

Corner blocks: These blocks are constructed exactly the same way as the X blocks you just made. Except you will substitute (1) A/F unit for (1) B triangle. Trim and press. You will make 4 of these blocks.

Sashing Strips: These are constructed of (1) C rectangle and (2) G rectangles. Sew the G rectangles to each side of the C rectangle. Press your seams toward the center and repeat until you have made (24) sashing strips.
Assembly: To put it all together you will assemble the pieces row by row. Begin with the top and bottom sashing rows by sewing the following sequence of blocks end to end: corner block, sashing, X block, sashing, X block, sashing and corner block. Repeat. Note the direction of the corner blocks. Repeat this sequence twice more, replacing the corner blocks with X blocks to make the middle sashing rows. To assemble the sample blocks rows, sew the following sequence: sashing, sample block, sashing, sample block, sashing, sample block, sashing. Repeat this sequence twice. Next sew all of the rows together starting with the top row.

Border: For the border you will sew (3) D strips together, end-to-end. Cut the strip in half and sew (1) to each side of the quilt top. Trim off the ends. Repeat sewing (3) D strip together, end-to-end. Cut the strip in half and sew (1) to the top and (1) to the bottom of the quilt top. Trim off the ends.

When finished your quilt top will measure approximately 54” x 54”.

(Optional) A second border may be added. I recommend a 4 -6” border. To add the second border, simply follow the above instructions for adding the first border, changing the width of the strips to your desired border width.

Hallelluia Chorus

One of the few things I love more than quilting is music. I introduced my parents to my passion when I was in the 3rd grade, by bringing home a violin from school (remember the days when there were actual music classes in school?). I think everyone had that 1 teacher who truly inspired them, and for me it was Mr. Baggett, my high school choir director. I was blessed to be in one of the nations most accomplished choirs. My fondest memories come from our annual Christmas program, where we performed the Halleluia chorus and invited alumni in the audience to stand and sing with us. It gives me goose pumps still. Well, I found this funny YouTube video of silent monks singing the Hallelluia chorus and I couldn't help but laugh. I think you will enjoy it also.

Business After Hours

For a small town like Burkburnett, there is never a dull moment. On any given day there are a number of activities to mingle with neighbors and fill your belly with good food! I was caught in this weeks newspaper mingling with my neighbors, Guy Duke of Edward Jones Investments and Susan Mitchell of Joe & Joe and Granddaughter. Guy's business was the host of this months Business After Hours event and I can assure you I wasn't going to miss out on good chili and dessert! Tomorrow night I'll wander on over to the library for Family Pie Night... M'm!

It's Quilting Season Again

It's Quilting Season!

For me, quilting season starts right after the kids go back to school.
That's when I find a few hours in the day to spend on myself. The first
week of school was a little crazy around here. I was stitching up a new
nap mat for my youngest and sewing school patches on uniforms for my
oldest. And in the midst of it all I had a bazzillion orders coming
through the front door of the shop.

Moda Panache by Sanae is one of the prettiest lines I've seen this fall - so I ordered nearly the entire collection! The pictures simply don't do it justice.

I've also been stocking up on a few new Farmers Market
fabrics as a last hurrah before then end of our summer gardens. At least
my okra is still doing well through the heat, but I had to suppliment
peppers, apples, lemons and carrots for these yummy fabric varieties.

Don't forget about those Quilt For A Cause projects. I still have Blank Fabric's Ovarian cancer collection and the new line of Karen Neuburger's Ribbons of Pink Hope from Quilting Treasures. It's PRECIOUS! Here's an idea - how about some quick
tissue cozies for gifts or donations?

Friendship Display of Quilts

The 2009 Friendship Display of Quilts is Saturday October 3rd at the Burkburnett Community Center from 10am -5pm.

We are selling tickets for a chance to win this beautiful Texas donation quilt. Tickets are $1 each or $5 for 10. Available at The Stitching Depot and at the quilt show. Drawing will be held at 4pm October 3rd.

You'll never believe this! We have RICKY TIMS coming to do a book signing at 11:00am. How great is that?! This year we're raising money for a really good cause. Meals on Wheels is such a valuable service, so please attend and show your support.

We are also hosting a can food drive. Bring canned food items and you can get into the show for free!

We are currenly accepting quilts to display. There is no fee and the only requirement is the quilt must be homemade. The older the quilt, the better the story. There is a $100 prize for Viewer's Choice. Please share with us. Download an Exhibit Form from the website or call me at (940)569-0804.

We also need lots of help with the show. The Mainstreet Madness Event will be held on Friday, August 21 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm in downtown Burkburnett. with the Business Bingo event beginning at 1:00pm at participating locations This months event will include raffle prizes, business bingo, live music, a giant cake walk, Stitching Depot's Mainstreet Block Party and special promotions and activities throughout the evening

WIDE BACKING the smart choice!

Whether you just spent the past year meticulously hand piecing the blocks of your masterpiece or you whipped a quick scrappy out on your machine overnight, it's not a quilt until it's quilted. And before it's quilted you're going to have to make a decision about your backing fabric. Are you going to use 45 inch wide fabric and sew seams vertically or horizontally cross the back or are you going to buy wide quilt backing for a smooth seamless finish? Either option is perfectly acceptable, but here's a point to consider. Wide quilt backing is generally cheaper! I know, you're thinking about that new bolt of wide backing you just saw at the quilt shop that was $15.00 yard verse that 45 inch wide stuff that was only $9.00 yard.

Let's do the math:
A 90 x 90 inch quilt will require 2.5 yards of 108 inch wide backing at $15.00/yd = $37.50 Using 45 inch wide fabric will require 2 pieces, 2.5 yards each, seamed down the middle at $9.00/yd = $45.00. You could have saved $7.50!

New Horsin Around Collection and Burkburnett Rodeo

My family and I just returned home from a wonderful and much needed vacation. I had so much fun shop hopping through 4 different states and rocking on the porch of our cabin in the cool mountain air of the smoky mountains.

But now it's back to work and opening the stack of mail and boxes from UPS (United Present Service). I've been adding new fabric to inventory and uploading them to the website as quickly as I can. Here's a peek:

Just in time for the Burkburnett Boomtown Rodeo this weekend - Moda's latest release "Horsin Around" by Cheri Strole. Be sure to stop by the shop on Saturday at 4pm to watch the parade from the comfort of our air conditioning.

I ordered a couple of bolts with musical notes from Moda's Shirtings collection. These prints are circa 1875-1900 and are versatle enough for your civil war collection as well as those ever popular black & white quilts.

Here's a teaser for you. Quilting Treasures sent me 1 bolt from my order of Steam Engines. Your guess is as good as mine, but I'll let you know when they decide to ship the rest of the collection. It's very lovely and fits nicely with the Stitching Depot theme.

Our Quick Weekend Getaway

It's turning into a really hot summer here in Texas and I'm counting down the days until my Smoky Mountain vacation. In the meantime, my family took a quick weekend getaway to visit Grandma in NE Oklahoma and we added a few side attractions along the way. We took the H.E. Bailey turnpike to Oklahoma City and veered off onto Route 66.

If you're in Arcadia, Oklahoma be sure to make a stop at POPs Gas Station! It's really cool with a resturant and every flavor of soda you can possibly imagine IN A BOTTLE!

Now here's a whale of a tale - what would you think if one evening, your husband turned to you and said, "Hun, for our anniversary I'm goin' to build you an 80 foot whale out in our pond." That's just what Hugh Davis did, in Catoosa, Oklahoma. The whale was built in 1970 and my husband remembers his Grandma took him there to go swimming after it opened. Pretty cool - pretty crazy!

Just an hour across the border we found the Wilderness Drive-Thru Safari! This is a must see for the entire family, young and old. I'll admit I was there for the Kangaroo petting zoo, but fell in love with all of the baby animals.

I actually played with a lion cub and got in a cage with a monkey! Look closely, the girls a petting a Mommy kangaroo with a joey in her pouch. What's really amazing is the slightest move of Mommy and little joey disappears deep into the pouch in a flash.

This is Blake - a 3 month old baboon. Blake is my new best friend and we bonded very closely while grooming each other. He's such a sweetheart.

The only thing I love more than quilting, is spending time with my family. This was an amazing trip and the girls will not soon forget the special things we all were able to do together as a family.

TSD at the Abilene Quilt Show

This past weekend Mark and I set up shop at the Abilene quilt show. If you haven't been, you should consider making the short 3 hour drive with a group of friends next year. Those West Texans put on a really nice show. We had record high temperatures, but inside the Civic Center was nice and chilly. This was the last quilt show on our calendar for the summer and now we start focusing on our own "Friendship Display of Quilts", which is coming up on Saturday October 3rd. Keeping Up With My Busy Schedule

The past few days have been a whirlwind. I was in Turlock, California for my cousin's wedding. She was absolutely beautiful and the groom, so handsome in his fireman's uniform. I'm so happy for them.

As I drove back to the Sacramento airport, I stopped by my favorite downtown location, the rose garden behind the state capital. I didn't see the "Governator", but still enjoyed touring the grounds.

I'm finally home after an unexpected overnight stay in DFW, when my flight to Wichita Falls was cancelled.

I'm only home for a few "minutes" it seems, before I begin packing the store and traveling to the "Heart of Texas Quilt Show" in Waco this weeekend. That means I will have to close the store Thursday, Friday and Saturday with the exception of the Mainstreet Madness Block party, which will be Friday evening from 4pm - 7pm. Don't forget to bring last month's block and you'll receive this month's block FREE!

Have fun and sew much fun while I'm away. And I'll see you all again on the following Wednesday.

We just returned home from California and honestly, it wasn't easy saying good-bye to all of my family and the beautiful white Christmas in the Sierra Nevada.

The girls spent mst of their time sledding, building snowmen and snow angels. And if they weren't throwing the snow, they were eating it.

Sierra took ski lessons and has decided that from now on she just wants to go to ski school, not regular school.

Mark was always busy working on small projects or wiring in my parents new house.

And I was always busy finding another excuse to go out for Thai food with my sisters.

I hope you all had as wonderful a holiday season with your family and friends as I did.

This Week At The Quilt Shop

The girls had the chance to dress up early for the annual costume parade at Sierra's pre-school. They also won best-costume last week at the Mainstreet Madness costume contest.

We will be Closed at 3:00pm on Friday Oct 31st to allow Kacy and I the opportunity to get our kids ready for trick-or-treating later that night. We hope you have a fun evening whether getting out with the kids or simply passing out candy.

Savannah's 1st Birthday

HAPPY 1st BIRTHDAY SAVANNAH
If you have little one's in your life than you probably have a few Baby Einstein DVD's around the house. While Savannah was watching TV I saw her giggle as this colorful caterpillar crawled across the screen and I thought, that would be an easy cake to make. It was a big hit with the big kids too!

I bought a soccer ball cake mold at Michael's and 3 boxes of chocolate and 3 boxes of white cake mix. The head is 2 balls put together with a couple cake pins to hold it together. The rest of the body is alternating white and chocolate half balls. I used 1 ball first cut in half and then cut into 2 1/2" strips (after all I am a quilter) to make the legs. To make the grass I put coconut and green food color in a plastic bowl, cover tightly and shake shake shake. I used Pillsbury Whipped icing to help keep it light weight and found the cookies at the grocery store last minute. That's all!

It whipped together quickly in an evening and is a lot more fun than a dry, boring store bought cake.

Sierra's 4th Birthday

HAPPY 4th BIRTHDAY, SIERRA!

This was such a fun party. At the last minute I called Castaway Cove and to my surprise they only had 1 other birthday scheduled for that Saturday. If you want an easy party, fully catered I highly recommend the waterpark. And it was super affordable. My entire family really had a fun time, young and old. I'll admit I didn't go all out on the birthday cake, but I don't think anyone really cared - they weren't there for cake!

M e r r y C h r i s t m a s
This is my favorite time of year. I look forward to decorating the tree and
hanging the garland and ribbons. With our young family we have made a new
tradition of dressing in our matching Pj's and driving around looking at
Christmas lights just before bedtime. I hope your Christmas is filled with
wonderful memories with your family and loved ones as well.

Preliminary Organizational Meeting

Dear Fellow Quilters -

As you may or may not know, I am about to have a baby any day. To add more irons to the fire, I am also organizing the Friendship Display of Quilts on October 6th, 2007. I desperately need your help and request that you call or attend this weeks organizational meeting. Any help you are willing to provide will be greatly appreciated - from co-chair, setup, cleanup, handling raffles, turning quilts, etc. We will have a list of needs - voluneer as little or as much as you choose.

There will be vendor booths as well as several charity booths raising money for local causes. Additionally, net proceeds generated from the Display of Quilts will be donated to the Burkburnett Boys and Girls Club.

I placed an article in this weeks Burkburnett Informer Star, but in case you missed it I'd like to pass that information on to you:

The City of Burkburnett, Texas is celebrating its centennial. Throughout the year there have been many events to recognize this milestone in history. On Saturday, October 6, 2007 the City will host its 7^th Annual Friendship Festival. This event began in 2001 and has been growing every year, with vendor booths, food and entertainment. Last year's attendance topped 3,000 people.

Friendship Display of Quilts will be hosted by the Quilters of Burkburnett, at the Burkburnett Community Center Building. This will be a non-judged show with vendor booths and will coincide with the Friendship Festival.

First Bank, City of Burkburnett and Burkburnett Independent School District combine to commemorate the first town lot sale. Events begin with the arrival of a train, the re-enactment of the first town lot sale, period costuming, free games and free food. We hope to see you there for the exciting festivities!

Quilting Tip: Drill or punch a small hole in the cap of an old prescription medicine bottle. Screw the cap back on the bottle and Voila! A place to put your dull and broken needles instead of throwing them loosely in the trash can.
